From Desert Dust to Ocean Depths: How the Mojave Sparked My Coral Vision

We climbed out of our packed Mini Cooper into the Mojave Desert, dusty and overheated after a long drive from Berkeley, CA. 🏜️

The setting sun dried the air, tinged with the scent of scrub stoic in the face of another dry summer. Boulders and dry ravines stretched across the landscape.

Standing before this vast expanse—a reminder of the ancient sea that once covered this land during the Paleozoic era—I felt something unexpected stir within me as I stood on the cracked ground. 🌄

Among the Mojave’s ancient whispers, the wind brushes your skin, cool yet alive with the stories of time. The vast horizon stretches, its silence a symphony you can hear in the rustle of dry Joshua trees. The sharp scent of sun-baked earth mingles with the dusty breeze as the air tastes faintly of salt, a reminder of the ocean this desert once was. Each step crunches softly beneath your feet, the arid ground firm, yet crackling with resilience. Here, the desert invites you to sense its secrets and marvel at its unyielding beauty.


To my eyes, the desert’s muted browns, greens, and grays began to change in my mind, transforming into vibrant blues, teals, reds, pinks, oranges, and yellows. These colors, though out of place, felt intensely alive in my imagination. 🏜️

Instead of seeing the arid landscape before me, I envisioned thriving coral reefs, teeming with color and movement, as if the past were breaking into the present. 🪸

As I started walking, I imagined the textures of coral that might be beneath me—rough, smooth and intricate.

In the Mojave Desert, where the sun scorches the earth and life dances between survival and resilience, Ivan Trujillo found inspiration for his coral reef-like paintings. The dry air kisses your skin, the dust crunches underfoot, and the wind whispers through the sparse, stubborn branches. Artist Ivan Trujillo sits before his vibrant coral reef painting, a sea of orange lines against deep blue that breathes life into stillness. Ivan is an artist based in Berkeley, California. He graduated in 2010 with an M.F.A. in Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
